history doesn’t repeat itself, but it does rhyme
We’re living in turbulent times. You feel it. I feel it. Everyone does.
Whether it’s cultural tension, political unrest, personal overwhelm, financial stress, family worries, or all of the above, it can feel like a battle.
So… how do we fight back?
Let’s start where we can actually win: ourselves…
It doesn’t matter which “side” you’re on right now. What matters is who you want to be and how you want to respond to create the best possible outcome, which starts from within.
E + R = O
If I could give just one psychological tool for navigating chaos, it’s this:
E + R = O
Event + Response = Outcome
Simple? Yes.
Easy? No.
Powerful? Absolutely.
The E (Event) is everything that happens to you - invited or not.
The O (Outcome) is what results, but here’s the key: you don’t control the outcome directly.
What you do control? The R (Response).
That’s where all your power is.
You can’t stop life from throwing events your way. Sickness, loss, betrayal, burnout, blessings even, they come regardless. But your response to those events is where you shape your story.
Reacting is easy. It’s human. Sometimes it even saves us.
But we don’t have to stay in reaction mode. We can pause, breathe, reflect, and choose a response that aligns with who we are and where we want to go.
That’s the real battle. And it starts within.
A Note on Crisis and Triggers
A proper response is hard. When life hits you in the gut, the first thing that kicks in is survival mode.
Fight. Flight. Freeze. Fawn.
Reactions are fast, like a triggered bullet, and they carry emotion like gunpowder.
Then the emotions linger. Like campfire smoke on your hoodie, or a skunked dog that just ran through your house.
You don’t just “snap out of it.” The chemical reaction takes time. That’s biology.
But here’s the other side of the coin: thoughts are electrical.
You can quickly switch thoughts.
You can shift the energy now.
One choice. One thought. One breath.
That’s the beginning of your power.
Think About What You Want in the End
No emotional tool or mindset hack works unless you know where you’re going.
So ask yourself:
What kind of world do I want to live in?
What do I want it to sound like, feel like, smell like, look like?
What kind of person do I want to be when it’s all said and done?
We are being pushed to focus on everything that’s wrong right now. The injustices. The chaos. The noise.
But the real fix isn’t short-term. The fix is lifelong.
It starts with ourselves and it ends when we do.
Final Thought
You are not the problem.
You are not broken.
You don’t have to conform to matter.
You bring value just by being.
We go against the grain not because we’re rebels without a cause, but because space is needed—for breath, for connection, for healing, for you.
Break the mold.
Take time for yourself.
Not because it’s easy, but because it’s right.
